LOCATION: This position is on-site, office-based in Atlanta, GA (hybrid model - 3 days remote / 2 days in office- Tuesday & Wednesday)

 

Under the direction of and in collaboration with the Accounting Manager - Alliances, the Senior Accountant is responsible for recording, analyzing, and reporting accounting transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles for the Accounting Department.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

National
• Prepare monthly financial statements, analyze information to ensure validity and accuracy of data, reconcile analyze and prepare supporting financial schedules.
• Review and analyze General Ledger balance sheet, income & expense accounts to ensure accuracy with regards to amounts posted, coding, accrual, reversal of accrual, and proper amortization of prepaid expenses.
• Analyze operating cash account, reconcile bank statements to General Ledger operating cash accounts, record interest income and all banks transfer activity; contact banking personnel and resolve all discrepancies. Liaise with Accounts Payable personnel in outstanding checklist reconciliation.
• Prepare and review journal entries for general ledger accounts, for release of assets and schedules of releases of all restricted funds.
• Monitor restricted and endowment funds. Prepare schedules (expenses vs. budgets) and coordinate with project personnel to ensure that expenses will not exceed budgeted amounts.
• Prepare quarterly financial statements for reporting to State Alliances.
• Support external financial statement audits and assist with not-for-profit tax compliance
• Highly engaged in monthly financial close process and internal financial reporting
• Lead efforts around consolidations and reporting for discrete entities
• Complete various miscellaneous projects and initiatives across the accounting organization
• Manage accounts payable activities for BGCA and work performed by Accounting Specialist

 

Alliances
• Assists the Accounting Manager, Alliances and Vice President/Controller in the maintenance, processing, recording, and reporting of accounting transactions for State Alliances
• Review and post to the General Ledger transactions entered by the Staff Accountant and Accounting Specialist
• Assist the Accounting Manager, Alliances to obtain financial record, award letters, grant documents, board rosters and other financial information from all the alliances and maintain a log of all awards received
• Review and post all cash receipts entered in the accounting system by the Staff Accountant and ensure appropriate supporting documents are received for checks deposited in the banks.
• Reconcile bank statements to General Ledger cash accounts on a monthly basis and follow up outstanding items
• Prepare requests for payments to vendors and process payments after ensuring that they are in compliance with organization policies and process requests for payments
• Assist the Accounting Manager, Alliances to implement “Funding Holds” consistently across the board for federal, state and private sector grants to Clubs
• Prepare and post journal entries in the accounting system.
• Assist the Accounting Manager with the Financial Statement Audit for all State Alliances. Oversee Staff Accountants assistance with pulling selections and responding to additional audit requests.
• Assist the Accounting Manager with the onboarding of new alliances including, but not limited to, setting up their company in Basware, recording transactions YTD, creating and providing onboarding training to BGCA Fiscal Services

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Prepare various lead schedules and financial reports for year-end audit, and provide requested information and respond to questions regarding schedules.
• Perform special projects or assignments as required by Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
• Serve as Basware lead and oversee BGCA National Accounts Payable as well as 38+ State Alliance Accounts Payable
• Manage and implement new projects with consultants to increase efficiency of Basware and Accounts Payable processes for BGCA as well as the State Alliances
• Oversee the Staff Accountants preparation of tax compliance workbooks sent to our Accounting Firm. Handle all correspondence and questions from the Accounting Firm in regards to 990 preparation and compliance
• Established the process for onboarding Alliances to Basware and the submission process for getting invoices paid. Conduct Basware trainings for all existing alliances. Train Staff Accountant to conduct trainings for Alliances and any new directors.
• Review and post transactions entered by the Staff Accountant in the General Ledger
• Effectively manage the day to day operations of all direct reports

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting required and/or education/experience equivalency.
• Minimum of three to five years’ experience in public accounting (audit) environment preferably in a non-profit environment
• Public accounting background preferred

 

ABILITIES
• Working knowledge of standard and advanced accounting theories, principles and fund accounting in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles is essential. Knowledge of computerized accounting software, Microsoft Access and other Microsoft Office applications are essential.
• Progressing toward MAcc and/or CPA is preferred
• Capability to effectively lead and manage Staff Accountant and Accounting Specialist
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Attention to details and highly organized
• Strong inter-personal skills, works well in a team environment
• Self-starter with significant initiative
• Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and consistently meet deadlines
• Demonstrated track record of providing exceptional business partnering

 

ENVIRONMENTAL & WORKING CONDITIONS

• Normal Office environment
• Less than 5% travel expected
