START/END DATE: Sept 2025 – Dec 2025, renewable to May 2026
DEPARTMENT: Government Relations
WORK REQUIREMENTS: Part-time/Approximately 15-20 hours/wk
SALARY: $15/hour
LOCATION: This internship is a remote based position

 

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Lead Director, Government Relations, the Government Relations Intern will support the State Government Relations team, including research, planning and execution of events and campaigns, and other core team responsibilities related to the organization and its mission. The State Government Relations team works closely with State Alliances of Boys & Girls Clubs, representing the interests of participating Clubs within each state, to bring together the Movement and Clubs as one voice at the state level. Currently, there are approximately 44 State Alliances and 275 people serving on Alliance boards. The State Government relations team and State Alliances advocate for programs and priorities that support youth and the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and track visits of state elected officials’ interaction with Boys & Girls Clubs.
• Research legislation and regulatory comments important to Boys & Girls Clubs at a state, and local level; Conduct web-based and other research as needed on BGCA legislative issues and state budgetary and appropriations process.
• Attend virtual coalition meetings, and hearings on behalf of BGCA.
• Create and update critical biographical and background information on state leaders and stakeholders.
• Support distribution of weekly press clips and other thought leadership opportunities.
• Support drafting and execution of action alerts, social media, and other advocacy or communications strategies.
• Assist with production and editing of government relations & advocacy materials and internal documents.
• Support collection of relevant Club and youth stories related to BGCA priority issues to further enhance BGCA advocacy efforts.
• Support State Alliance operations items, including data collection/organization, operations manual, Alliance Hub maintenance, and centralization of Alliance information using BGCA systems.
• Provide other program, administrative, and organization-wide support as needed/assigned.
• Other related/comparable duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Currently enrolled at an undergraduate or graduate college/university
• Basic understanding and interest in advocacy, government relations, public policy & legislative procedure, public relations, communication, and/or marketing strongly encouraged
• Interest in nonprofit and youth development
• Strong interest in project management in nonprofit environments

 

Skill-set
• Strong computer skills and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, SharePoint, etc.).
• Strong verbal and written communications skills including proofreading, copy editing, writing, and oral communication skills
• An ability to manage time appropriately.
• Demonstrated professionalism and maturity and a tolerance for rapid pace and shifting assignments and priorities
• Flexibility, good judgement, attention to detail
• A demonstrated commitment and interest in the mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of America
• An ability to adhere to organizational policies and procedures as described in BGCA's Intern Policy, Ethics Policy and elsewhere.
